Our Tuesday volunteer group spent a morning at the end of July, brushcutting and raking off the rough grass areas in the community garden at Hinton St Mary to try to improve the biodiversity there. The perennials border is looking magnificent, full of plants in flower that will provide pollinating insects with nectar, and the arable mix in the nearby border was looking its best.
Afterwards we moved back to Somerset to work in the little field next to the St Cuthbert’s chancel at Oborne, removing the seedheads from the hogweed plants to reduce the spread of this plant (which can come to seriously dominate wildflower meadows that are regularly cut late in the season). And we also removed the flowering ragwort to stop it seeding.
Many thanks to everyone who took part!
