Last winter we were invited by Forestry England to do some clearance work on Monmouth Hill (also called Melmoth’s Hill) followed by butterfly recording last summer . This had been an open grassland area for hundreds of years but had become scrubbed over and the grass very rank.
We have had several very successful meetings on the site during the winter and have recut the large swathe of grassland we opened up last year.
This week we would like to finish our work on the coppice coup for the year and there should be bean poles and peasticks available for volunteers to take home.
The main job will be to tidy up the jumble of stems and twigs from the coppicing work to clear the woodland floor for the flora and fauna to thrive next season. We shall be separating the pea sticks and bean poles and will be creating a dead hedge of the unwanted material.
Meet for a 9.30 start at the parking area shown on the map:
Please bring your refreshments and lunch, wear work gloves and thornproof and tickproof clothing, and if you are a brushcutter operator, bring your PPE.
Please let me know if you would like to attend and include your phone number so that I can call or text you if we need to change the plans because of the weather.
