CANCELLED Woodland glade maintenance at Monmouth Hill, Milton Abbas Butterfly Conservation Dorset branch volunteer workday.

Monmouth Hill, Milton Abbas

We have been invited by Forestry England to do some butterfly recording this coming season on Monmouth Hill (also called Melmoth’s Hill). This has been an open grassland area for hundreds of years but had become scrubbed over and the grass had become very rank.
There has been a large amount of Ash dieback in the woodland plantation either side which has been cleared by FE which may to be to our advantage as it produces a mosaic of woodland clearings which will be good for butterflies. Out of this disaster, it would be good to see some benefit!

On our earlier visits in the autumn and winter, we have used brushcutters to clear a huge amount of rank grass and bramble and we shall be finishing off this Friday so that we can set up the butterfly transect for the coming year.
We are going to meet at 9.30am and park 50m inside the Fishmore Hill Forestry England gate to the woodland where there will an area for parking. 4-wheel drive vehicles may be able to drive up the track to the site. Or else we will walk. We are going to work for just the morning finishing around 1pm to coincide with forecast arrival of more rain! Please could you confirm with me if you are able to help.
