Visit to Rugbourne Farm near Timsbury grass cutting

Rugbourne Farm was called ‘the cradle of English Geology’ by ‘The Father of English Geology’, William Smith, when he lodged here 1791-5 and began his stratological map of England. The owners have saved the house from imminent collapse (it was on the ‘At Risk’ register of SPAB). The farm itself is only 12 acres and was runner-up in the John Hughes Memorial Trophy (FWAG), which was a great achievement as the winner was a ‘real’ farm of 400 acres. There us a copy of Smith’s early geological map of the area in the hall.
I need to know whether you will be able to help us with this task as we have to work out the logistics of the day and whether you would like to travel up in your own car or share cars
We aim to start there at 9.30 – it should take an hour at the most from Sherborne/Yeovil. The meeting point will be at 8.30am in the public carpark in Ilchester.
We will provide the tools for the work, but please bring your own drinks, your packed lunch and your own working gloves. If you can join us for this, please contact me asap (07981.776767 or email: nigelspring@yahoo.co.uk ).
