Bottom Coombe Quarry, Easton, Portland - cutting clematis, thorn and bramble.

Portland - Bottom Coombe Quarry, Easton

Today we will be working with our friends in the Dorset Countryside Volunteers continuing with the task of cutting the huge mass of Cotoneaster in the SE corner of the site. If the wind is favourable (from the east or north, taking the smoke away from the houses) we will burn up what we cut.

This area of Bottom Coombe Quarry below the Windmills at Easton is a renowned butterfly site with Small Blues, Silver-studded Blues and Chalkhill Blues as well as many other species of invertebrates, and there were very good numbers of Blues last season.  And wonderful wildflowers.

Last autumn’s clematis and bramble cutting – before

and after. We are aiming to kept the clematis under control to allow the grassland to recover
