Curtis Fields SNCI Weymouth - weeding out undesirable invasive species

Markham Avenue, Weymouth

Photo shows one of the Southern Marsh Orchids flowering in the SW corner of the SNCI – one of our priorities this coming autumn will be to clear the increasing scrub which is threatening to suffocate these orchids.

Today we will be working on the area where we have cleared the scrub in the last 2 seasons, weeding out the unwanted species that are undesirable invasive plants. One particularly determined species is Canadian Fleabane – luckily it is relatively easy to pull up. Phil Sterling will join us for the first part of the day – he used to be Dorset County Ecologist and will help to identify the plants and insects we see; this should add a very useful and enjoyable (and entertaining!) element to the day!

Meet at 8.30am at the southern end of Markham Avenue where there is now a gate to give access to the SNCI. see map. If you arrive later, please walk up to find us.

We will provide the tools for the work, but please bring your own mug, hot drinks and snacks, your packed lunch and working gloves with you. And if you have a sack please bring it.

There should also be a rich display of wildflowers and butterflies to see.
