Barrington Hill National Nature reserve, nr Ilminster - habitat management

Barrington Hill National Nature reserve, nr Ilminster

This will be our last of the three visits to this beautiful site this season We had two very productive sessions there in February!

Our routine management work on this site has included clearing the rank vegetation round the ponds and the entrance area of the reserve, cutting back the blackthorn and bramble round the field margins, keeping the footpaths clear and anything else that crops up during the winter. One job we are particularly hoping to finish this time will be the clearance of willow trees from the middle pond and re-pollarding one of the willows by the upper pond. Please bring safety glasses if you do not wear spectacles, for the blackthorn work and bring thick thornproof gloves.

Adder’s tongue Fern will be appearing in the fields soon

Meet at 9.30am at the meeting point by the layby.
We will provide the other tools for the work, but please bring your own mug and refreshments, your packed lunch and working gloves with you.
If you need a lift, please contact me in advance of the task (07981.776767 or emailĀ nigelspring@yahoo.co.uk) – it might be possible to arrange something.
If you are a chainsaw or brushcutter user, you will need your own PPE and you should have attended a refresher course in the last five years.
