This national park in western Hungary is based on Lake Fertö on the border with Austria (Lake Neusiedl in Austrian). This is the westernmost Eurasian steppe lake with one of the largest areas of reedbed in Europe and a wide range of species-rich habitat zones adjacent to it and in the nearby Hanság area. The threats to the biodiversity of the area come from drainage and intensification of farming and neglect of the agriculturally poorer areas leading to invasion by scrub and unwanted exotic trees like Robinia pseudoacacia.
