Jaap van Beelen has once again organised a hiking holiday in Bulgaria to follow the sheep flocks on their transhumance journey. Here is his email: “Dear friends of sustainable nature,
This may be of your interest. Transhumance in Bulgaria will again be on with shepherd “Baj Dobri” and his herd. Please be welcome in Kotel. The program you also will find at http://www.gokotel.com/ under Hiking/Wandelen.”
Wendy Astill (EuCAN Hungary visit May 2009) joined in this holiday adventure in 2010 – she has wonderful memories and would recommend it to anyone! “I had a great time on this trip a few years ago. It is a lovely way to experience a rural Bulgarian way of life, almost lost forever. Good walks along old tracks & across open country. Dobri the herdsman is a real character, although his English is limited; you will get to know his flock, horses and Karakachan dogs (used to guard the flock at night). Staying out with the herd at night is well worthwhile. Jaap is a great host with a lovely Guest House, so I’m sure the rest of the accommodation he’s chosen will be good, he is also a good English speaker. ”
