January 12th On Tuesday this week, the EuCAN Somerset volunteers spent the day at Coombe Hill Wood, near Street, cutting and clearing rank grass, bramble and thorn to enable the grassland to flourish and become more flowery. Click here for the EuCAN Somerset programme of activities for the coming weeks.

On Wednesday, we had a team of contractors and volunteers opening up glades in the scrub at Alners Gorse Butterfly Reserve nr Hazelbury Bryan and clearing scrub regrowth to improve the habitat for butterflies (particularly Marsh Fritillaries) and other wildlife.

And on Thursday the EuCAN Cerne Valley volunteers, assisted by several locals, spent the day by the village hall in Cerne Abbas, opening up the overgrown water meadow and laying the hedge (rather a line of trees!) beside the riverside footpath that leads back to the village and the hedge beside the village hall. We will be continuing this work on January 23rd and ultimately hope to watch the rejuvenated water meadow return to its flowery best after many years’ neglect.

All the photos from this Wednesday and Thursday can be found on this link: Eucan Dorset activities January 2020 and the photos taken by Jane Tearle of the Cerne Abbas work the following week can be seen here .
