EuCAN Somerset Volunteers at Rugbourne Farm nr Bath

Sign

The EuCAN Somerset volunteer group travelled up to Rugbourne Farm on July 10th with four brushcutters and cleared the hay from the roadside field and two verges.

Rugbourne Farm is renowned as the place where William Smith, the ‘father of English Geology’, drew up the first stratigraphical map of England.
It was a very hot day and challenging work, but we all but completed the job with four brushcutters working and our hosts Zanna and Andy hauling the cut grass away with their tractor. It was a very satisfying day! Many thanks to Zanna and Andy for their warm welcome.

This biography of William Smith, which mentions his time at Rugbourne Farm, may be of interest.
