In March 2019, Storm Gareth blew apart one of the magnificent giant ancient ash stools along the bottom of the Cerne Giant Hill slopes. Possibly 500 years old. A group of the EuCAN Cerne Valley volunteers cleared the fallen branches in order to re-open the public footpath. The black stain visible in some of the cross-sections of the main boughs looks like a fungal infection. This might explain why the tree was vulnerable to windblow.
