The Gryphon School Sherborne - grassland management

Gryphon School eastern playing field

This is part of our efforts to create flower-rich habitats round the margin of the Gryphon sports field. We are slowly succeeding but there is a central area which is now totally overrun with Spear thistles and although in small quantities this is an excellent plant for pollinators (and Painted Lady butterflies), here it is in plague proportions on the central bank in the field.

Hill Cuckoo Bee – Bombus rupestris

We shall meet at 9.30am at the entrance area shown on the map. Bring thick gloves and boots and a spade for slicing off the thistles if you have one. Also bring refreshments and a packed lunch.
