Scrub clearing on the slopes below Lyme Regis to improve the habitat for the Wood White butterfly colony there

Lyme Regis - the Charmouth Rd carpark

The area below the Charmouth Rd carpark in Lyme used to be open and clear of scrub after the cliff stabilisation work was completed. However, it has rapidly become scrubbed over and will soon be unsuitable for Wood Whites. The plan is to clear as much of the invasive scrub as we can, to open up the habitat for the butterflies and their larval foodplants (vetches). The Wood White is now only hanging on in Dorset on the Lyme Regis undercliffs.

We shall be using machines to clear as much of the scrub as we can and will be removing it or stacking it where it will not affect the site and the butterfly habitat. We hope to have as many volunteers helping us as we can find, as we only have one day here!

Meet at 9.30am at the beginning of the path on the edge of the carpark. Bring refreshments and lunch and loppers and bowsaw or pruning saw if you have them. We will also be providing tools. Wellies recommended!

Please note: we can reimburse volunteers for the carpark charges – please keep the tickets. And we can reimburse you for your fuel expenses to Lyme Regis if you would like us to…

If the forecast for the 25th is unfavourable, we will attempt to do this on Thursday 26th, the following day. So far the forecast looks promising!

Please let us know if you are intending to take part (email nigelspring@yahoo.co.uk) and make sure you leave your mobile number so that we can contact you if the plans have to be changed.
